How the pouch got here

  1. 1790s–1800sThe reticuleA small drawstring purse carried in the hand once dresses lost their pockets. Everything a clutch is comes from that problem.
  2. 1920sThe evening bagFlat, rigid and small, made to be held rather than worn, and to hold a card, a key and a lipstick.
  3. 2010sThe pouchThe same idea in a soft zip case, which is what most people actually carry: the clutch by night, the organiser by day.
